If you are not planning a trip to the Balkan Peninsula but want to enjoy their yummy food, you can satisfy your taste buds from the comfort of your home.

In this article, we have gathered a list of 5 delicious Balkan foods you should try. These delicious dishes include different courses of food that are mouthwatering and savory from one of Europe's most underrated regions.

#1 Burek

Burek is an everyday staple in Balkan cuisine brought to the Balkans from Turkey. You can also find different versions of the Burek in Northern Africa and the Middle Eastern regions.

Bureks are soft thick, crispy pastries filled with cheese, meat, potato, or spinach. However, you can have them sweet with jams for a delightful breakfast. You'll find Bureks in almost every bakery in the Balkin region, but the good news is that you can make them very easily at home.

#2 Dolma

Dolma originated from the Middle East and is a delicious dish typical in the Balkans and Mediterranean. Almost every city in the Balkans has its own version of Dolma.

Bosnians serve the rice dolma with a lemon or garlic sauce while others cook it with an onion-based vegetable such as eggplant and zucchini or meat as the primary ingredient.

It seems that you can use any ingredient and turn it into Dolma; however, the dish mainly consists of rice wrapping with a vegetable or meat base and served with a liquid sauce.

#3 Krempita

Krempita is another delicious dessert from the Balkans and literally means cream cake. The dish consists of a layer of custard and chantilly cream that is later condensed into a pastry dough.

This juicy dish is puffy, light and its creamy texture makes you salivate just by looking at it. When you have a bite of Krempita at your home, it will feel like you have never left the Balkans.

#4 Pljeskavica

Pljeskavica is a grilled spicy meat patty made of beef, lamb, pork, veal, or a mixture of different kinds of meat. Pljeskavica is a fairly common dish in the Balkans and is served plain or on a bun with ajvar or kajmak spread. This food is cheap but tasty and often resembles a hamburger.

#5 Shopska Salad

You can see Shopska salad on almost all the menus in the Balkans. The traditional Shopska salad has cucumbers, onions, cheese, peppers, and tomatoes, but you can add a mixture of various ingredients to it like any salad.

Also, you won't find any leaves in the Shopska salad, and it is mainly served with olive oil and vinegar to add a little sour flavor. This dish can be perfect for vegetarians because traditionally, there is no meat in it of any kind.
